Have you dreamt about the farmer’s life, then scoff as you remember you live in a country with very limited land space? Let’s challenge that thought, and take a leaf (heh) out of the books of HDB farmers who managed to successfully cultivate a thriving edible garden in the comfort of their corridors or kitchen.

If you too are interested in growing something that you can harvest from farm to table, NParks is currently distributing free seed packets to eligible households. The initiative runs till 30 Jun, and each household can apply online to receive a packet containing two kinds of vegetable species. A concise guide will be provided to guide you through the growing process.

From the available information sheets provided by NParks, it seems that the packet may contain any of the following: brinjal, cucumber, lady’s finger, long bean, tomato, cai xin, kai lan, bayam, kangkong and xiao bai cai. While these were probably chosen for being fairly easy to grow, specialised gardening tools such as those below, can make your farming more enjoyable.

Determine where the majority of your gardening will take place and what you’re looking to grow. That’ll help you decide if you need these items, whether for organisation or to help you achieve a garden despite a small space or lack of sun.

You’ll need more than a small hand spade and watering bottles to ensure your plants thrive. Trimming your plants, ensuring it gets enough light or water and maintaining soil quality, will all determine your success or failure with the edibles. These tools are half the battle won.
